STFC Players Know The Score
News
Every season as part of an awareness for the ‘Know the Score’ campaign; a campaign that started in early 2011 and was formerly
the Mr Brightside Project, through former Millwall, Charlton Athletic and QPR goalkeeper Nicky Johns, who lost his son Stephen at the young age of 26 through bowel cancer. The aim of the campaign was to bring together charities (which includes The Men’s Health Forum and the Professional Footballer’s Association) who all had links to the professional game, to work in partnership under the ‘Know the Score’ banner and utilize the power of football to achieve maximum impact when raising awareness of bowel cancer signs and symptoms. Know your body! Bowel cancer can affect men and women of all ages. So get to know your body and if you notice any of the following and they last longer than three weeks, make an appointment to see your GP:

- Bleeding from the bottom without any obvious reason
- A persistent change in bowel habit to looser or more frequent bowel movements
- A lump in your tummy or tummy pain, especially if it’s severe
- The chances are it won’t be cancer, but it’s better to play safe
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Be physically active
- Cut down on alcohol
- Be a non-smoker
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet which is high in fibre and low in red and processed meat
- Take part in bowel cancer screening when invited
- Take steps to reduce your risk of the disease
- Be aware of changes in your body and report them to a doctor
